about
I wrote this track some two, three weeks after the start of full lockdown in the UK during the COVID-19 pandemic, and first posted the MP3 of this piece on Newgrounds in early April 2020. The lyrics were inspired in large part by the feelings coursing through me as I viewed Pope Francis' Urbi et orbi message in late March addressing the (then) current subject, as well as during the prayers, where an eerie silence had befallen the land because only a small number of people could be out; most were hiding in their homes. I contemplated what could happen as a result of the pandemic, and my hopes and dreams for our society as a whole.
Little did I know, when I wrote these lyrics, that the world would explode and that we would be doing a good bit of the things mentioned below -- just while facing a lot of terror, blood, violence, and upheaval.
lyrics
I need you now, just like the wayfarers need the stars,
for the night is dark and I'm feeling all alone,
and the stormy winds ever beat upon my sails,
and I might just fall into the ocean deep.
Cast away the clouds that block the small lights in the sky,
for we need them now, and more than ever before;
we are tired and weary, and in perpetual need of sleep,
cast aside in silent prisons of our own.
O hallowed silence the world over!
No song of mine can ever add to your beauty,
O hallowed silence on the altar!
You are fitting melody,
you are fitting melody—!
Many people are crying, just as many more will mourn,
many others are feeling lost and all alone.
Still many others will falter, as they struggle to breathe.
Will their laboured breaths be as a song to you?
O hallowed silence on the altar!
No song of mine can ever add to your beauty,
O hallowed silence on the altar!
You are fitting melody,
you are fitting melody—!
Lord, the dark clouds are hanging over our world; da pacem, Domine!
And the giant waves are going to overwhelm; da pacem, Domine!
For we're scared and we might lose the ones we love; da pacem, Domine!
And our world's never going to be the same again; da pacem, Domine!
Help us cling to you, the Unchanging, in our trial; da pacem, Domine!
Still the waves and winds and elements by your hand; da pacem, Domine!
Banish far away the darkness in our hearts; da pacem, Domine!
Come into our turmoil, stay close to our side; da pacem, Domine!
Help us never to forget your goodness; da pacem, Domine!
Heal the sickness of the world that we live in; da pacem, Domine!
Be the light that shines on all the dying, da pacem, Domine!
Be the light of dawn for all who meet the grave, da pacem, Domine!
And embrace us in our time of mourning, da pacem, Domine!
Turn our tears into the beat that spurs us on; da pacem, Domine!
Help us make the song of Mary true again; da pacem, Domine!
