about
Once upon a time, there was a starry sky that was so beautiful, it caught the imagination of a young girl who had just perilously crossed the seas to come here.
It became her light at night-time when there were no other lights.
It became her listening ear for her fears, hopes and dreams when there were few others who would lend ear to her.
Then one day, the starry sky disappeared.
And all her memories slowly faded away with it.
First heard at the close of the inaugural virtual concert of 22 January 2022, I'd actually written this song a good while back, in March of 2020. It was one of those songs that felt wistful and sad to me, but also magical. I wrote it as an ode to the positives of my time as a student in Hatfield. I know it's a long shot, but if any of you are listening to this who went to university with me, or who attended Mass with me and encouraged me on my journey, know that I am thinking about you all.
The artwork is a photo I took of my lantern at dusk, while a friend and I were out searching for the Neowise comet.
lyrics
Goodnight,
stars and moon above me
that shone me a path
through the frightening night.
Goodnight,
side-streets and alleys at midnight.
Through you ran the lifeblood
that made me feel free.
Goodnight,
dreams that I whispered to friends
whom I've left far behind
trying to find my own way.
Goodnight.
Goodnight,
poems and stories and songs
that had called to my heart
for the very first time.
Goodnight,
faces of friends I once knew,
whose memories I cherish
and still proudly own.
Goodnight,
feelings of freedom and joy,
for you made me feel
like I finally belonged.
Goodnight.
Goodnight,
from hundreds of miles far away.
The pages have turned
on these still hopeful days.
Goodnight,
stars and moon in the sky
that shine down on that one soul
whose dreams have gone by.
Goodnight,
people and places I love;
for you made me feel
I'm in heaven above.
