Prompt number thirty, "skin."
It was obvious to me, upon seeing that prompt, what I needed to do. Neighbours be damned. I recorded three tracks: the resonant head of my medieval snare (which has its nice, but also slightly deadened, deep bass thump), the click of the rim of said snare, and a darbuka.
For those few moments when I was playing these drums, I felt vulnerable again. I would describe it as the kind of vulnerability when I am alone with a friend who understands me, who understands the emotions I pour onto the resounding skin and the dance that I break into when I play. For those few moments, I felt immense joy and passion. I'm aware that this piece is only a sketch: I only got to play like this and I wish I could have had longer to refine it, but that's okay. Those few moments were enough. The rhythms in this are my prayer for when words inevitably fail me.
